Can Reading the Bible Actually Hurt You Spiritually?

How many times, when a professing Christian faces a dilemma, do other Christians say “Well, just read your Bible”?  That sounds like solid advice on the surface…but what if you don’t know how to read your Bible in correct context?  Or what if your world view or belief about God is skewed already?  Could reading the Bible in those circumstances actually do more damage than good?

Barna Research has recently published a study of Americans and our bible reading habits; and one Christian organization thinks the findings are a warning of the growth of apostasy within professing Christianity.

In our first segments we’re joined by Jay Seegert of The Starting Point Project.  Jay discusses some of the questions that baffle today’s scientists; questions that are easily answered if we just turn to God’s Word.

Today’s discussion included a brief contextual review of the history of the great Flood, and in Genesis 7:6-17, the Bible states:

Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth. 7 Then Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the water of the flood. 8 Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, 9 there went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 It came about after the seven days, that the water of the flood came upon the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13 On the very same day Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, all sorts of birds. 15 So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life.16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lordclosed it behind him. 17 Then the flood came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth.

How Not to Read the Bible – Breakpoint

I read about Barna’s “State of the Bible” survey, this headline caught my eye: “Americans Hold Record Liberal Views on Most Moral Issues.” That from Gallup.

Since Gallup has been surveying people on such topics, more Americans than ever before view the following as “morally permissible”: Divorce, sex between a man and a woman outside of marriage, gay relations, having a baby out of wedlock, doctor-assisted suicide, pornography, and polygamy, among other things.

So … Half of Americans are Bible users, that number has remained pretty steady, and yet more Americans than ever are changing their views (in the wrong direction) about serious moral issues.

Prosperity Preachers, the Pope, Women Pastors, and More! Q&A Friday

On Fridays, Mike and David talk about whatever is on your heart and mind.  This week as always, we answer as many listener questions and comments as we can regarding:

  • Using Romans 7 as an excuse to go on sinning

  • Is the Pope causing some Catholics to question their own teachings?

  • Should women be allowed to be pastors?

  • Are all prosperity preachers ‘charlatans’?

  • A youth group leader concerned that kids in church bristle when they hear the word “sin”

  • Creflo Dollar or Todd Friel: whose doctrine is biblically sound?

  • A woman learned her husband had an affair: should she forgive and stay in the marriage?

  • Is tithing a requirement in the Christian church?

  • Jesse Duplantis and the “Word of Faith” movement.

Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. 21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. 22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin. Romans 14:20-23

“For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will restore your fortunes and will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’ Jeremiah 29:10-14

“Lord, make me to know my end
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how transient I am.
5 “Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths,
And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah.
6 “Surely every man walks about as a phantom;
Surely they make an uproar for nothing;
He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them. 7 “And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. Psalm 39:4-6

Is The Church In America Losing Its Moral Authority?

Jesus established His church to evangelize to the lost, build strong disciples, and equip believers for the work of the Holy Spirit.  The responsibility of the Church is to represent Christ, shining into a world of darkness, influencing culture for righteousness, and declaring the hope of the gospel.  Instead, at least in America, the church has generally been compromised in several areas and instead of affecting secular culture, she has been infected by it.

To be sure, we are not talking about every church; there are many who stand firm on God’s Word and are actually being what the church is called to be.  But as a whole, the church in America is in spiritual and moral decline, ill-equipped or unprepared to do what Jesus calls it to do.

This morning, Mike and David look at a couple of scandals and false teachings that have infiltrated “American Christianity” as well as what the future might hold if we do not repent and return to the fundamentals of God’s Word.  We focus in on the scandals and controversy rocking The Southern Baptist Convention, the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s compromise on creation and gender, and still another Word Faith Prosperity Preacher who says God has told him to get money from people because he “needs” a private jet.

Do You Understand How To Use Your Most Powerful Weapon In The Christian Arsenal?

In our final segment this morning, we look at the Trump Administration’s efforts within the Department of Education to reverse some of the horrible damage done by President Obama’s radical pro-LGBTQ and anti-Christian mandates.

But first we look at the most powerful weapon in the Christian arsenal: prayer. An all-powerful, just and righteous God actually invites us to come to Him with our hopes, concerns, requests, and fears.  But do we fully understand the power of prayer and even how to pray?  Do we sometimes pray as a last resort when our human efforts have been exhausted and proven ineffective?  Are there restrictions or obligations God puts on our prayers?  And how do we respond when God does not answer our prayers exactly as we think they should be answered?

Elijah Abraham of Living Oasis Ministries joins us to take a biblical look at the power and privilege of prayer in our lives as born-again believers in Jesus Christ. This includes three major categories of prayer.

An Insider’s Look at the Prosperity Gospel Movement

Benny Hinn is one of the best-known purveyors of the dangerous Prosperity Gospel movement.  He has made wild, unfounded claims, twisted scripture to its breaking point, and proclaimed  “prophecies received from God” that have not come true.  The Bible says that is the first sign of a false prophet.  Hinn lives a life of luxury built on the backs of naive followers who want the alleged anointing and the riches that the Prosperity Gospel promises if you just have enough faith.

Hinn’s nephew Costi was on the inside of the movement for years, but God has delivered him from its grip; and now Costi is speaking out against the dangerous teachings of Uncle Benny’s organization.  This morning we cover Costi Hinn’s discussion with Justin Peters about his journey into and out of this dangerous heresy.

As with all people who are deceived by a false gospel, we pray that God will open their eyes to the deception and help them see the true nature and character of God.
